Donating to Volunteer Services at Western State Hospital is a simple way to make a big difference for our patients! Here are some frequently asked questions that may come in handy as you get ready to donate!

Where do I take my donated items?

Monday through Friday,
8:00AM – 4:30PM (except state holidays)

Donations may be dropped off at the Information Center located just inside the entrance of the hospital or at the loading dock located pass the entrance on the right.
For large donations, please call Volunteer Services at 540-332-8595 or 540-332-8163 in advance to make an appointment for your drop off.

What items are acceptable and not acceptable?
Please see our wish list for donation suggestions. Due to safety concerns for our patients, please follow these guidelines when donating -  NO gift wrap donations, NO hi-heel shoes, NO nail clippers or nail files, NO mirrors, NO gum, No ink pens, and No donation with violent themes.

Does Volunteer Services offer a pick-up service for donations?
In order to keep our costs down, we are unable to make house calls to pick up donations.  However, we will gladly assist you in offloading donations from the vehicle.

Who does Volunteers Services help?
Volunteers Services helps the patients at Western State Hospital.

May I deliver my donation directly to a patient?
We are sorry, but because of concerns for the patient's privacy, infection control and security, donors are not permitted to visit patient floors. Please be assured that our patients are appreciative of your donation.

What happens to donated items that are not suitable for our patients?
Our goal is to try use every item that is donated. We recycle items that are not suitable, by donating them to Goodwill, New Directions, or another non-profit organization. 

What is my donation worth when I claim a tax deduction?
The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires donors to value their own donated items.
