Western State Hospital is a state psychiatric hospital which is licensed and operated by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.
Visiting Hours and Restrictions
Our visiting hours are structured around patient participation in psychosocial rehabilitative treatment. Visitors are welcome and encouraged as they can be especially important to a client’s recovery. However, in the interest of a client’s rest and well-being there are times when visitors may be limited. Visiting hours for units are from:
- 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. weekdays
- 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weekends, holidays and non-Mall days.
Exceptions to the visiting hours may be possible through prior consultation with the treatment team (for example, to visit after attending a Treatment Planning Conference, a family emergency, etc.).
In general, visitation should take place on the unit, in the visitors' room. Visitors are not permitted to visit in the client’s room. There is no visitation on the Treatment Malls.
Children under eighteen (18) must have prior approval from the Treatment Team and be accompanied by a parent or supervised by an adult.
Visitation is generally limited to four (4) persons per patient at a time.
All visitors must report to the Information Center upon entry into Western State Hospital (WSH) as the initial step in visiting a client. Staff will issue each visitor a badge which will allow access to designated areas of WSH up to the public entrance to the unit to which the client is assigned. All adult patient visitors are required to bring valid picture identification in order to confirm their identity for visitation within WSH. Temporary badges will be issued to them and their ID will be held in the Information Center. In some instances this requirement may be waived based on the decision of a patient’s Treatment Team, WSH Administration, or the Administrator on Call (AOC), or guidance to the destination by a staff member. (Church groups are escorted by unit team members and do not need to show ID.)
Visitors are subject to search and must consent to inspection of all items in their possession that they want to bring into WSH.
WSH is a tobacco free facility. The use of tobacco is not permitted anywhere in the building or on the hospital grounds.
