Western State Hospital is a state psychiatric hospital which is licensed and operated by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.

Volunteer Opportunities

We would love for you to be part of the team at WSH. Here are a few ways YOU can lend a caring hand, help others grow and make a lasting impression on someone’s life. All volunteers are provided with training, education and supervision. Activities Partner
Activities: Assist with activities throughout the year such as playing basketball, checkers, tennis
Availability: 2-4 Hours/Week, Weekday Evening, Weekend Anytime


Clothing Store Aid
Activities: Assist clients in clothing store, sort through donated items, and maintain clothing inventory.
Availability:2-4 Hours/Week, Weekday Anytime


Community Companion
Activities: Become a friend to someone with mental illness – visit often, send birthday cards, play games and watch movies together, etc... Companions are matched with individuals of the same gender, often close in age, and with similar interest.
Availability:1 Hour/Week, Weekday Evening, Weekend Anytime


Volunteer Services Council Member
Activities: Join the non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of the patients at Western State Hospital. Through fundraisers, donations, and volunteers, the Council supply services and items that the state cannot supply by law or by limitation of funds such as dances, parties, tickets to concerts or plays, and more!
Availability: 2-5 Hours/Monthly, varies
