The Volunteer Services Department at Western State Hospital is committed to making our patients' stay more enjoyable. Our mission is to provide support to our patients and the entire hospital by effectively incorporating talented, caring volunteers into various aspects of the care and treatment of those suffering from a mental illness, while seeking donations from the community.

We depend on public support to help those throughout Virginia who are suffering with a mental illness. YOU can help by giving of your time or making a donation.

Volunteers play a crucial role in Western State Hospital programs and Volunteer Services ability to improve the lives of those suffering from mental illness. Volunteer Services relies on supportive friends in the community to bridge the gap between government funding and the hospital’s desire to make our patients’ stay more enjoyable. All donations are used solely for the purpose of comfort and welfare of our patients. You can help by making a contribution in one or more of the following ways:

Cash Donations
Monetary contributions give Volunteer Services the flexibility to use funds where the need is greatest. You are always welcome to designate your gift in honor of a friend or in memory of a loved one. Checks should be payable to “Volunteer Services for Western State Hospital” and sent to:

Donate Items
Donate items to our Clothes aRe Us store. Volunteer Services maintains a “wish list” of items that budget cannot cover. Click here to visit our wish list. Items are always needed at the hospital.

Donation Drop Off Location and Hours

Monday through Friday,
8:00AM – 4:30PM (except state holidays)

Donations may be dropped off at the Information Center located just inside the entrance of the hospital or at the loading dock located pass the entrance on the right.
For large donations, please call Volunteer Services at 540-332-8595 or 540-332-8163 in advance to make an appointment for your drop off. 

Please note that due to infection control and privacy issues we do not have opportunities for donors to personally distribute donations to patients.
